Elevating Our Game: Insights from Para Athlete Cole Rothenberger's Mini Camp
Last week, our table tennis club had the privilege of hosting a mini camp that not only elevated our game but also left us inspired. Led by club member and aspiring 2028 Paralympian, Cole Rothenberger, the two-hour session was a rare opportunity for our members to learn from an athlete who is not only passionate about the sport but is also on an incredible journey to the Paralympics.
Cole shared invaluable tips and insights gained from the high-level coaching he receives at the Houston International Table Tennis Academy, focusing on areas crucial for any table tennis player aiming to improve their game. The session kicked off with pre-training warm-ups designed to prepare the body for the intensity of the drills that followed. These initial exercises set the tone for a session that was as much about smart preparation as it was about skill execution.
The heart of the camp was dedicated to meticulously crafted drills that covered every aspect of a table tennis point. From serves and serve placement to serve return and ultimately, finishing a point, Cole’s approach was strategic and methodical. He emphasized the importance of precision and mindset in each drill, ensuring that the nine participants could not only execute the skills during the camp but also understand the thought process behind each shot. The drills were not just about repetition; they were designed to be fun and engaging, fostering a love for the game while improving skills.
This mini camp was more than just a learning experience; it was a testament to the power of perseverance, dedication, and the love of sport. Cole Rothenberger, through his journey and his willingness to share his knowledge, has inspired us all. As we look forward to the 2028 Paralympics, we do so with the knowledge and skills gained from this session, ready to support Cole and apply what we’ve learned to our own development in table tennis. Here’s to growing together as a club and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve, both individually and as a community.
